General guidelines and individual dog care instructions
Feeding Schedule
Twice a day: Morning (7โ8 AM) and evening (5โ6 PM) meals unless otherwise specified by owner.
Portion size: Always follow the owner's instructions. Never guess โ overfeeding can cause digestive issues.
Fresh water: Refresh the water bowl at least twice daily. Keep it clean and full at all times.
Owner's food only: Use only the food provided by the owner. Do not substitute brands without permission.
Eating habits: Note if a dog refuses food โ this can be a sign of stress or illness. Inform owner promptly.
Exercise & Potty
Walks: Minimum 2 walks per day โ morning and evening. Adjust based on dog's energy level and breed.
Potty check: Take dogs outside every 3โ4 hours. Puppies and seniors may need more frequent trips.
Leash always: All dogs must be on leash outdoors, even if they appear calm. Never let unfamiliar dogs off-leash together.
Weather: Avoid walks in extreme heat. Early morning or evening walks recommended in summer.
Medications & Supplements
Prescription meds: Administer only medications provided and clearly labeled by the owner. Confirm dosage in writing.
Timing matters: Give meds at the exact times specified. Set a reminder if needed.
Hide in food: Many dogs accept pills mixed into a small amount of wet food or a treat. Ask owner for tips.
Log it: Write down every dose given in the dog's individual care log to avoid double-dosing.
Grooming & Hygiene
Brushing: Brush long-haired dogs daily to prevent matting. Short-haired dogs need brushing 2โ3x per week.
Paw wipe: Wipe paws after every outdoor walk, especially in wet or dirty conditions.
Ear checks: Check ears every 2โ3 days. Redness, smell, or discharge should be reported to owner.
Bathing: Only bathe if owner has requested it and provided shampoo, or if the dog is soiled.
Sleep & Comfort
Own bedding: Use the dog's own bed or blanket โ familiar smells reduce anxiety significantly.
Quiet time: Allow 1โ2 rest periods during the day. Overtired dogs become anxious and reactive.
Separation anxiety: Some dogs bark or pace when new. Remain calm, use their name softly, give a chew toy.
Crate if needed: Use a crate only if the dog is crate-trained and the owner has confirmed this preference.
Emergency Protocol
Contact owner first: For any health concern, contact owner immediately via the number on file.
Vet on call: Keep the nearest 24-hour emergency vet number on hand at all times.
Warning signs: Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, refusal to eat or drink, limping, labored breathing โ act fast.
Do not wait: If the dog seems in pain or distress and you cannot reach the owner within 30 min, go to the vet.
Foods Toxic to Dogs โ NEVER Feed: Chocolate, grapes & raisins, onions & garlic, macadamia nuts, xylitol (found in gum and peanut butters), avocado, alcohol, caffeine, raw yeast dough, and cooked bones. Even small amounts of some of these can cause serious illness or death. When in doubt, don't give it.
